Subject The article deals with the process of insurance market development in the Russian Federation over 2014–2017. Objectives We focus on analyzing the insurance market for 2014–2017. The analysis includes the ranking of insurance companies, consideration of changes in their main activities and revealing the reasons. The study also analyzes indicators of insurance market development, its growth points, and identifies the most promising areas of activity. Methods We examined the works of domestic and foreign scientists, used economic methods to analyze the statistical information, and applied the systems and analytical methods. Results The paper analyzes the status of the insurance market, evaluates the profitability of certain insurance businesses and insurance companies, and provides a company ranking. The findings can be used when formulating the conceptual directions of the insurance market development. Conclusions The range of services of the insurance market is being transformed. The profitability of different areas of insurance business depends on general economic conditions.
