The article provides a comparative description of the terms "finance", "financial system, the structure of the financial system, used in modern domestic and foreign economic literature, the author introduces a classification of structural elements (areas and sections) of the financial system, which can be used in research activity for comparison of domestic and foreign financial systems of countries with developed market economies, as well as in the teaching process by using a functional approach to characterize the financial systems of foreign countries.
