Importance This article examines the main trends and peculiarities of the development of Russian economic thought in the late 19th century.
Objectives The article aims to show how in the face of rapid development of capitalism, Russian economic thought has acquired its own distinct specificities and turned into an independent business area.
Methods On the basis of the problem and chronological method, the paper examines the economic views of the representatives of Liberal, Liberal-Populist, and the emerging Marxist schools of thought.
Conclusions and Relevance I found that in the second half of the 19th century, infiltration of capitalist relations into the village led to the degradation of the community on the basis of differentiation of the peasantry and the transformation of the Populist direction into the Liberal-Populist one. Liberal populists of the economic school advocated an evolution of society, the peaceful and gradual transition of the country towards socialism. At the same time, the Marxist school of economic thought was developing. The Bolshevik period would give a new impetus to the fight against critics of Marxism. The findings are used in lectures and practical training on the basic courses of Economic History and History of Economic Doctrines.
