Importance During the crisis period of global and national economies, it becomes especially relevant to contemplate how the economic thought evolved throughout various milestones of the Russian history and what issues were raised. This article overviews key areas and specifics of the Russian economic thought and its development in the mid 19th century.
Objectives The research demonstrated how Russia had been lagging in terms of capitalistic relationships, and how it determined the scope and nature of issues in question. The Russian economic science embraced opposite views and stances. However, all scholars were common in their attitude to the feudal system and serfdom. However, they suggested using different methods and tools to effectuate socio-economic reforms and transformations.
Methods Based on the problematic and chronological method, I reviewed the economic ideas of those representing liberal, revolutionary and democratic movements.
Conclusions and Relevance Economic views of the Slavophiles underwent evolutionary changes. The 1861 Reform dissolved the difference between the noble and bourgeois liberals. The findings and conclusions can be used for lectures and practical studies as part of the courses of Economic History and the History of Economic Doctrines.

Keywords: serfdom, political economy, capitalism, socialism, community
