Subject. The activities of multilateral development banks (MDBs). Objectives. To analyze the prerequisites for establishing the MDB system, and to examine its evolution and structure. Methods. Historical-economic analysis, as well as systems and structural approaches, were applied. Results. The role and trends of each multilateral bank individually, as well as their position within the overall MDB system structure, were identified. It was established that MDBs are highly flexible institutions that have gone through several stages of development: from supporting economic recovery after the Second World War to addressing infrastructure challenges, combating poverty, and later promoting digitalization, environmental sustainability, and sustainable development. Conclusions and Relevance. The World Bank is the core of the current MDB system, with its activities complemented by regional development banks. MDBs are significant as an instrument of international cooperation, as they are able to adapt to new challenges such as digitalization and environmental sustainability. The materials presented in the article may be useful for developing development strategies, assessing the effectiveness of MDBs, and forecasting their future role in the global economy.
