Importance The paper examines the process of formation and development of deposit insurance systems abroad and in Russia.
Objectives The main objective of the study is to suggest ways to improve the Russian deposit insurance system by studying the world experience and identify prospects for its further development.
Methods For the study, I used a theoretical generalization of the world experience, as well as the methods of periodization, classification, and logical analysis.
Results The paper develops the periodization of deposit insurance system development in the world practice and presents a deposit insurance system classification. As well, it suggests certain ways to improve the Russian deposit insurance system.
Conclusions To further improve the Russian deposit insurance system, it is useful to encourage certain economic innovation like, for instance, a gradual extension of deposit insurance practices to non-bank credit institutions, differentiation of the maximum amount of insurance compensation for deposits and so on.
