Subject The article considers the network structure of financial relations.
Objectives The purpose of the research is to analyze the nature and classification of financial networks. The article proves the relevance of researching the financial sector, and financial networks, in particular.
Methods I review various approaches to the study of networks and the networking process in the economy. The analysis of existing definitions of the financial network concept enables to conclude on insufficient study of the issue and the need for refining and enhancing the definition.
Results I propose a unique specification of the financial network definition. The analysis of scientific literature shows that classifications of financial networks exist only in the publications of foreign authors, and are not available in Russian scholarly papers. The existing classifications do not account a few classification criteria and need to be supplemented. The article includes a classification of financial networks consisting of ten classification criteria; some of them are defined for the first time. The classification takes into account both the Russian and foreign experience, including the use of alternative settlement media, such as the network communication. Conclusions There are different types of networks in financial relations, which should be considered for management purposes. The network approach enables to look at planning the anti-recessionary measures from a new angle. It also helps forecast their efficiency in the event of exposure to exogenous shocks, prevent crisis, and develop economic and financial sustainability of the entire organization.
