Importance Due to the need to increase the intensity of innovation activities at the level of business entities, the problem of creating an effective system of management of enterprise innovation development is increasingly important. Objectives The aim of this study is to develop a methodology of analysis of development prospects for innovative activity, as well as capacity of businesses to implement innovative projects, which in practice will contribute to enhanced sustainability of their innovation development. Methods In this article, we propose an algorithm of analysis of innovation activity and prospects for its further development at an enterprise. The analysis implies applying the method of dividing enterprises by classes of innovation development sustainability. We have practically tested the proposed methods of analysis of innovation activity on the case of Russian industrial enterprises operating in the metallurgical industry. Results We have analyzed the capabilities of the enterprises under consideration to implement innovation projects. We assigned a class of innovation development sustainability to each enterprise, and on its basis, we provided recommendations for making decisions on innovation policy. The study also includes the analysis of prospects for development of both the innovation projects that are underway and that are in the preliminary design stage. We also identified problems of innovation development at the present stage. Conclusions and Relevance We conclude that the key to successful operation in modern market conditions is the introduction of special systems of selecting prospective lines of development taking into account modern requirements of the economy and enterprise's capability to conduct innovation activities. Practical application of the methods described in the article will ensure flexibility and consistency of decisions owing to optimal combination of different objectives of the enterprise.
