Article is devoted to definition research "state credit" in the theory and practice. About 60 various sources which were incorporated in three groups are investigated: educational literature, dictionaries and encyclopedias, and legislation. The main contradictions in modern understanding of the state credit are revealed, the most fair treatment of this concept on the basis of credit etymology is defined, important specifications to it are offered and proved
