The analysis of existent concepts of efficiency of commercial bank performance prevailing in the 1970s - 80s, has made it possible to come to the conclusion that they are mainly directed toward short-term results, associated with profit maximization and cost minimization. At present there is a trend for competition to shift to the sphere of intellectual capital accumulation and regulation of long-term relationship with customers. The transition to the concept of strategic banking management, considering business cost increase as a fixed aim, becomes urgent.

Keywords: productive efficiency, technical efficiency, production possibilities curve, price efficiency, production function, economies of scale, economies of scope, cost, average cost, lean banking, high-profitability banking, performance, strategy focused organization, market value, shareholder value, capitalization
