The role of N. I. Turgenev in Russian financial science

N.I. Turgenev (1789 - 1871) is a financier whose name is seldom mentioned in modern scientific research and textbooks on finance. He left an enormous heritage; there is even more documentary evidence of N.I. Turgenev’s acquaintances and relatives about his ideas and activity. Besides there exist a lot of studies devoted to his biography, career and scientific effort. In total, all this information to characterize the scientific and practical activities of the recognized financier was supposed to give reliable answers to all possible questions and avoid discrepancies and divergent opinions. However, the evaluation of neither N.I. Turgenev’s activity nor his role in Russian financial thought is unequivocal.
