The system of mandatory social insurance is an important element of socially-oriented market economy, the state and functioning efficiency of which determines to a great extent the social stability and society development level. The article investigates the process of formation of the system of mandatory social insurance of Russia, analyses the state of this system over the period of 1992-2006 and reveals the current problems and their causes.
