Importance Currently, the world is facing the increasingly different sources of tension and conflict of interests of the States that result in the political, economic, military problems. The Russian Federation cannot ignore what is happening in the immediate vicinity of its boundaries, for example, in Georgia and Ukraine. However, we must bear in mind the implementation of Russia's national interests in all vital areas, namely, in the international legal delimitation of the Arctic and security in the region. Objectives The article considers prerequisites of the strengthening of military safety of the Russian Federation in the Arctic against the background of the attempts of the leading foreign States to expand their influence in the region due to revision of its international legal status to the detriment of the Russian interests. The paper attempts to identify an optimum option of an international and legal delimitation of the Arctic. Methods In the present work, using scientific (analysis, deduction) and special legal methods (historical-legal, formal-legal), methods of estimation of the positions of the States on the issue of the Arctic delimitation, we have identified the normative legal acts, which consolidate the legal status of the Arctic. We have also evaluated building of the armed forces of the Arctic States. Results The findings highlight that the States' interest to the Arctic area resources is tending to increase. The delimitation of the Arctic should be based on the customary norms of international law, and not on the basis of the conformist amendments of the UN Law of the Sea Convention of 1982. Conclusions and Relevance At the same time, it is necessary to create the conditions to preserve the peaceful relations with the United States, its NATO allies and other States. We consider as timely the strengthening and modernization of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the Arctic region.
