Importance In our article we study the institutional characteristics of banking sector development and its analysis, which enables to identify the transformation directions of the institutional structure of the Russian banking system.
Objectives The reduction of the total number of credit institutions, several regional banks while increasing the total number of the internal divisions of banks in the regions, indicate the formation of the institutional model of the Russian banking system, based on the regional expansion of the largest federal banks and freeze out of the local credit institutions. The institutional transformation processes lead to the strengthening of the role of the State and to expansion of its presence in the Russian banking system. At the same time, we opine that the extent of the State intervention is approaching the critical point, when there is a threat to the market competition and the natural development of its institutional structure.
Methods To assess the direction of the regional expansion of banks, we have applied the correlative-regression method of analysis of a number of banking structure divisions in the regions depending on gross regional product, population, and the average monthly income per capita.
Results We have reached a conclusion that the identified directions of the institutional structure transformation of the Russian banking system exacerbate its negative features and may affect the system-based stability. In case of the deterioration of the economic environment of regional socio-economic problems, the regulator is deprived of the leverage to prevent the banking network activity in the regions concerned.
Conclusions and Relevance We emphasize that the results of this research can be used both in scientific work and the developing the strategies of the regional development of the banking system.
