The article studies the role and place of electric energy industry in the fuel and energy complex and the economy of Russia. The authors prove that the switch from traditional to new areas of use for the electricity are nowadays the main means for the electric energy inustry to influence positively on the social and economical progress. For Russia this is especially improtant, as elimination of the low efficiency of electricity use in traditional industries helps to intensify their growth with limited growth of electicity consumption, and the main progress can be achieved due to the high-tech progress oin the so-called new economy.
