Subject Health is the most crucial component of human potential, being fundamental for economic and social wellbeing. Public health influences demographic indicators and determines their development trends. The research focuses on the public health in the BRICS nations.
Objectives I conduct a comparative study into the public health in the BRICS countries using the Global Burden of Disease Study. I find the most promising joint programs of the BRICS nations for medical and demographic policy.
Methods The research is based on the philosophy of the Global Burden of Disease Study and Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY). DALY for various diseases or health problems includes years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL) and years lost to disability (net of mortality).
Results I identify causes of morbidity and mortality and risk factors triggering health problems in the BRICS countries. The article also highlights possible aspects for the BRICS nations to cooperate upon so as to strengthen the public health. Special focus is put on the development of national health care systems and joint activities for preventing contagious and non-contagious diseases, modern health assessment and treatment methods.
Conclusions and Relevance The Global Burden of Disease Study technique proved to be effective and practicable as a tool for comparative assessment of the public health. The findings may be used to forecast the social and demographic situation and make managerial decisions and program documents in order to overcome the demographic crisis and create new approaches to public health protection and strengthening.
