Importance The article presents some research results of the current state and immediate development prospects for the institution of traditional marriage in Russia. The relevance of this topic resides in absolutely new trends, which have not been observed in the last couple of years, i.e. in the development and functioning of the marriage institution of Russia. The scientific novelty of the topic lies in the new trends in the development of the institution of marriage of our country, since no one has studied it systematically, in their interaction. The results of the Western studies on similar topics are too limited in their application when they are transferred to the Russian culture, in general, and the system of marriage and family values, in particular.
Objectives The article aims to research if these trends are temporary, casual, or just a fashion craze, and if they are formed under the influence of the Western mass culture. I explore how profound the changes are in the structure and functions, as well as in the status and role of the institution of marriage, and also try to find out qualitative changes in the marriage and family values system, and facts of de-institutionalization of traditional marriage.
Methods The paper provides an analysis of the official human population statistics based on the data of the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation for the period from 1950 till the present time. The numerical values of total divorce, marriage and fertility rates over these years served as a basis for secondary analysis.
Results The findings include the evaluation of the current state of institution of marriage in Russia and medium-term prospects for its development. All this will allow planning more efficiently the measures of the State family, demographic and social policy.
Conclusions and Relevance The fluctuations of the level of marriage and divorce in our country in the last half century were conditioned mainly by structural factors, whilst under other equal conditions (constant gender and age structure of the population, sustainable socio-economic situation, etc.), the marriage and divorce fluctuations would have been much less expressed, or would not exist at all. It means that the institution of traditional marriage in Russia has been stably functioning since the mid-1960s. I emphasize that its state has no tendency to deterioration or improvement. The scientific significance of the research lies in the theoretical knowledge increment in the field of demography and sociology of family, and in improving the processing and analysis techniques of secondary statistical information relating to the topic of the research.
