The author discloses the concept of sustainability in the context of demographic family development. The study shows that demographic development underlies the mechanisms of family structure stability loss. The loss of stability is typical of the most families regardless of their demographic type. In quantitative terms, it is one or two changes (transitions) of the original structure of a family over ten years. The author has revealed the "ideal" type of family (the absolute nuclear family) that the families of other types seek to. The study has traced that each subsequent change in the structure of the absolute nuclear family increases the risk of family disruption, and for single persons, on the contrary, it increases the chance to found a family. The aim of the research is to show the influence of the main demographic processes on the variability of the original family structure of the Yakutsk population. The materials of the public opinion poll among the Yakutsk families conducted by the author in 1982-1983 served as an information base for the study. Unlike official results of population censuses, these materials provide a more complete picture of the specifics of demographic family types' development. The proposed method of analyzing the loss of stability of the original family structure, which is based on the materials of a special socio-demographic survey, shows that it is possible to use the method on another array with a wider coverage of the territories of the Republic. This will facilitate the comparison of the existing and new data and improve knowledge in the area of maintaining demographic stability of families.
