The article includes the comparison of two types of economic analysis - competitive analysis and benchmarking. It is has been established that it’s incorrect to equate these types. Unlike the competitive analysis benchmarking is not limited by the examination of the competitors but involves the participants of the other fields of economy that are considered to be the best practices. More over, the competitive analysis implies the strategy that is formed under the pressure of the external factors (competitor-oriented). And the benchmarking is based on the strategy crafted according to the own development path and choosing the best experience for its installation.

Keywords: benchmarking, competitive analysis, competitive advantage
