Subject. Increasing the competitiveness of Russian companies under external pressure, modernizing Russia's economy, developing the national security system.
Objectives. Assessment of the demographic situation in a number of border regions of Russia, determining opportunities for the country's economy to transition to a new technological structure.
Methods. Regression analysis tools were applied.
Results. It has been established that the dominance of the technological structure formed in the Soviet era reduces the region's ability to quickly respond to risks associated with carrying out a special military operation. The demographic situation in the southwestern old industrial regions of Russia is characterized by mixed trends.
Conclusions. The research results can be used by authorities to adjust social and economic development programs for old industrial regions.
