Subject. The problem of differentiating the regions of the Russian Federation by the level of economic efficiency.
Objectives. Analysis of modern mathematical approaches to assessing production efficiency. Grouping of subjects of the Russian Federation according to the values of production efficiency parameters.
Methods. Mathematical analysis tools were applied.
Results. A distribution of regions by efficiency level on the criteria plane has been obtained, Pareto-efficient regions have been identified, and absolute and relative production efficiency have been calculated. The most effective within the framework of the used model are the sparsely populated regions of the North, Siberia, and the Far East, which specialize in the extraction of natural resources.
Conclusions. The deterioration of the external economic situation due to sanction pressure and the outpacing growth of budget expenditures compared to the growth of revenues has led to a significant budget deficit both in the Russian Federation as a whole and in most regions of the country.
