Subject. Development of social infrastructure in rural areas, problems of employment of the population.
Objectives. Assessment of the labor potential of rural areas of the Volga Federal District. Development of measures to retain the rural population in the regions of the Volga Federal District.
Methods. Statistical and comparative analyses were used.
Results. In the Volga Federal District, there is a growing shortage of personnel, and the rural population is decreasing due to demographic decline and migration to cities. The average monthly salary in agriculture is growing, but in a number of regions it remains below the average for the Volga Federal District.
Conclusions. It is necessary to diversify the economy of rural areas of the Volga Federal District, and the key factors allowing to solve the problem of staff shortage are competitive wages and an effective labor motivation system.
