Subject. This article discusses the issues related to reforming the municipal solid waste management system and climate change.
Objectives. The article aims to compare the best available technologies for separate waste collection.
Methods. For the study, we used the general scientific research methods.
Results. The article finds that in Russia, greenhouse gas emissions per capita from the Waste sector continue to grow. However, the case of the Novosibirsk Oblast shows that as the proportion of sorted waste increases, and with the composting of food waste, the volume of greenhouse gas emissions will decrease.
Conclusions. The research results can be taken into account at the regional level when developing the main areas of environmental policy.

Keywords: waste, consumption, greenhouse gases, environment, best available technologies
