Subject. This article considers the evolution of the labor market in the regions of Russia and the impact of various types of economic activities on the volume of gross regional product.
Objectives. The article aims to assess professional groups and types of economic activity based on the structure of employment in the regions of Russia, based on the economic complexity concept.
Methods. For the study, we used regression and comparative analyses, and systematization.
Results. The article presents the regional employment structural complexity estimates by type of economic and a built integral index of the employment structure complexity by region of Russia. By including this index in the production function, the influence of the complexity of employment structures on gross regional product was assessed.
Conclusions. The integral index based on the basic indices of the complexity of regional employment structures by type of economic activity and professional group helps statistically assess the impact of the complexity of employment structures on gross regional product. This offers opportunities for using the integral index of employment structure complexity to choose priority areas for the development of regional labor markets.
