Subject. This article discusses the issues of development of a closed water use system.
Objectives. The article aims to conduct a comparative assessment of the changes of water use indicators in the regions of Russia from the perspective of transition to circular water use.
Methods. For the study, I used the general scientific research methods.
Results. The article substantiates the value of recycled water supply, and reveals the change in the share of federal districts in the total volume of recycled water consumption and a decrease in the water intensity of the gross regional product for recycled water. It indicates barriers that impede the growth of recycled water use. The problem of using wetlands for wastewater treatment is urgent.
Relevance. The results of the study can be taken into account when developing measures to improve the water resources management system.

Keywords: wastewater, wastewater disposal, wastewater capacity, discharge coefficient, circular water use
