Subject. This article discusses the development of forms of municipal government in Russia and abroad.
Objectives. The article aims to assess the quality of expert and analytical support for the activities of municipal authorities and identify the potential for their development.
Methods. For the study, we used contextual, comparative, and logical and linguistic analyses.
Results. The article presents a typological grouping of Russian and foreign associations operating in the field of local self-government.
Conclusions. The results of the study can be used to develop educational programmes in specialties related to State and municipal management.
