Subject. This article discusses the issues of regional differentiation within the context of the Russian higher education system's development.
Objectives. The article aims to develop a methodology for researching regional asymmetric development based on an analysis of university's extra-budgetary revenues.
Methods. For the study, we used the system and statistical analyses, and generalization.
Results. The article presents a methodology for diagnosing the asymmetric economic development of regions based on an analysis of the income of universities holding the top positions in various rankings.
Conclusions and Relevance. Changes in the university's percentage of extra-budgetary income depend on its location. The research materials can be used for further research into the scientific and practical problems of regional asymmetric development.
