Subject This article examines the areas of Russia's current socio-economic policy and the trends of its implementation in the international and national perspectives.
Objectives The article aims to critically analyze the implementation of certain areas of modern Russian socio-economic policy in the context of global challenges and national capabilities.
Methods For the study, we used the methods of comparative, logical, and critical analyses.
Results The article identifies the key problems that make it difficult for Russia to integrate into the global socio-economic space and shows the role of National Projects in Russia's social and economic development. It also presents the results of a critical analysis of the key provisions of the Russian Spatial Development Strategy.
Conclusions Russia's domestic potential is the key to its stable economic growth. However, the development of the country remains mostly inertial. The real growth rate of socio-economic indicators is significantly lower than the forecast values. The imperfection of the strategic planning system for the development of the areas creates quite a broad range of problems.

Keywords: sustainable development, goals, national project, spatial development strategy, strategic planning
