Subject This article discusses the issues of providing household access to non-conventional power sources. Objectives The article aims to identify and assess the possibilities of using non-conventional energy sources by Russian households and their cost-effectiveness compared to conventional energy sources. Methods For the study, we used a statistical data analysis. Results The article presents a forecast of substitution of conventional power sources for the non-conventional ones by Russian households taking into account technological, climate, geographical, and economic capacities, as well as the impact of sanction restrictions and trends of world hydrocarbon prices. Conclusions Opportunities and capabilities for the development of non-conventional energy sources in Russia are great. Using the natural and climatic potential to full extent, Russia can become a leader in terms of energy generation by non-conventional sources. However, the developed hydrocarbon production base makes it difficult to develop non-conventional energy, so its benefits can be implemented in those regions only where standard technologies of heat and energy generation are not available.
