Subject This article examines the influence of areas with special legal status on the regional socio-economic system.
Objectives The article aims to find out and analyze how such areas affect the socio-economic development of Russian subjects, and whether they affect at all.
Methods For the study, I used the methods of logical and statistical analyses.
Results Having considered the main types of special legal status areas, the article presents certain results of a comparative analysis of GRP dynamics, the balance of foreign direct investment, and the inflow of investments into Russian constituent entities.
Conclusions The availability of special legal status areas has a positive effect on attracting foreign investment in the region, and it improves the region's socio-economic situation.
