Subject The article addresses the modified Engel's coefficient as one of the elements of comprehensive assessment of transport accessibility for subjects of the European and Cis-Ural regions in the North of Russia.
Objectives The aim is to analyze the result of calculations of the classical Engel's indicator for subjects of the European and Cis-Ural regions in the North of Russia, offer its modified version, considering the influence of passenger transportation volumes, and define how the Engel's coefficient is applicable to the assessment of transport accessibility for northern regions.
Methods The study rests on statistical data on subjects of the European and Cis-Ural regions in the North of Russia for 2015–2017. We applied general scientific methods and the systems and comparative analysis. We also employed the comparative analysis of calculated values of the classical and modified Engel's coefficient.
Results The obtained values of classical Engel's indicator are not informative. The offered modified Engel's indicators contribute to comparability, and enable to estimate the considered subjects in terms of their supply with transport network, taking into account the volume of passenger transportation.
Conclusions The application of classical and modified Engel's indicators, when assessing the transport accessibility for subjects of the European and Cis-Ural regions in the North of Russia should be considered as a supplementary method, as these indicators deal only with transportation network security.
