Subject The article considers the issues of satisfying the medical care needs of rural population.
Objectives The study aims to develop recommendations on arranging the conditions for availability of medical services in rural areas.
Methods The economic analysis draws on data of the Federal State Statistics Service and the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. I performed a comparative analysis of availability of public health facilities in urban and rural areas, monitored the indicators of rural health services in the Central Federal District by region, presented the results of strategic SWOT analysis.
Results The assessment of the health care condition demonstrated well-marked differences in the health care service delivery to urban and rural population. This results in social disparity. The investigation of the Central Federal District cases displayed points of concern that are typical of rural medicine of Russia.
Conclusions The study revealed the low supply of doctors and nursing personnel in rural regions, absence of equal access to medical care, a reduction in the number of feldsher-midwife stations, insufficient material and technical base, failure to observe social norms related to health care services delivery.
