Subject This article deals with the issues related to the essence and assessment of economic security of the region considering the Ural Federal District as a case study. Objectives The article aims to assess the regional development and its prospects under the prevailing conditions, and determine objective prerequisites for economic regulation of regional development in Russia. Methods We compared macroeconomic indicators with the threshold values, assessed the changes in the region's economic growth rate, and used an expert estimation technique. Results The article presents indicators of economic security of the region. These indicators include eight main modules characterizing various criteria related to both the State as a whole and the specifics of economic security of individual organizations and enterprises operating in the region. The original approach takes into account the directions of State regulation of economic security and self-organization of economic entities of the region. Relevance The indicator system helps assess the economic security of the region and promptly react to the negative dynamics of indicators.
