Subject The article considers the problem of consumption in developed countries as a factor generated by the current development of the productive forces. The paper maintains criticism of consumerism, peculiar to the modern economic system, as the downside of increasing free time standards. It reveals the growing problem of environmental pressure on natural resources in the world and raises a question of controlled consumption.
Objectives The paper aims to identify the current trends in the development of production and consumption, determine the extent of consumerism and its adverse effects on the vital activity and ecosystem, raise the issue of controlled consumption.
Methods For the study, we used economic-mathematical and statistical and economic analyses.
Results The paper identifies the current trends in production and consumption patterns, defines the load of running consumerism on the ecosystem of the world economy, makes a strong case for the necessity of controlled consumption in developed countries at the present time.
Conclusions The paper concludes that to reduce the environmental stress on natural resources of the world economy, the joint efforts of developed countries to monitor consumption are required.
