The article considers the issues of evaluation of the effectiveness of large-scale sporting events with a view to socio-economic development of the region. The paper discusses the world research experience in the field of large-scale sporting events that can be used by Russia for major international competitions. It presents the results of the analysis of foreign experience in the assessment of the socio-economic efficiency of large-scale sporting events in specific regions and shows typical errors of host countries. The authors stress the need for a preliminary assessment of the effectiveness of large-scale sports events in the territory of the Sverdlovsk oblast, taking into account the best practices of the five basic elements of heritage: economic, social, political, communications, and the infrastructure ones.
