Importance The article deals with the issues of socio-economic development of the regions of the RF Northwestern Federal District. Objectives The paper aims to predict the development prospects of the regions of the Northwestern Federal District for the period up to 2017. Methods For the study, we used statistical, graphical, factor, cluster, and comparative kinds of analysis. Results The article presents the analysis and current rating of the dynamics of the constituent entities of the Russian Federation, forming the Northwestern Federal District. We show the vectors of realization of the potential of each region of the Northwestern Federal District for its further development. We give the economic diversity and synthetic prediction for the development prospects of the eleven regions, comprising the District. Conclusions The existing differences in socio-economic development of the Northwestern Federal District regions will increase, in possible scenarios of development. Prospects of development of the regions in economic turbulence largely depend on the capability to find resources to adapt to the new conditions. This is determined by the structure of the regional economy and the resources available.
