Subject The article deals with the issues of region management approach and ecological and economic development of the territory, which imply a purposeful activity of regional authorities and businesses to maintain a balanced structure of the relationship between society and nature.
Objectives The paper aims to conduct a comparative analysis of ecological and economic parameters of the Volga Federal District regions, and assess the environmental conditions for the region's economic development, using the materials of the Chuvash Republic.
Methods We used methods of economic and statistical analysis, synthesis, comparison, etc.
Results We find that the degree of environmental quality of the region depends on the economy sectors' impact. Environmental problems reflect the specificity of the branches of the regional economy. We determined that the beneficial environmental impact factors are a decline in capacity utilization, low level of industrial production, the lack in the GRP structure of a large share of industries that have adverse environmental impact. Among the adverse factors, we note a decrease in current and capital expenses for protecting the environment.
Conclusions Comparative ratings of regions reveal both the beneficial and adverse environmental impact factors. They should be considered when developing measures to ensure the transition to environmentally sustainable development. The solution to the problem of growing adverse environmental impact of the economy requires concerted actions of State and local self-government bodies, enterprises and public organizations to introduce greening methods of regional management and economic development.
