Importance The article discusses the levels of employment and unemployment in the Mari El Republic and their changes during the period from 2000 to 2015.
Objectives The article aims to analyze the labor market in the Mari El Republic, and compare the results obtained with the results of other regions.
Methods To analyze various aspects of the labor market of the Mari El Republic for the past 15 years, we used econometric methods, as well as statistical data of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Mari El Republic and Federal State Statistics Service.
Results The analysis of the data of the Federal State Statistics Service and unemployment rates in the Mari El Republic shows that the gainfully occupied population decreased by 8.5 thousand people for the period 2000–2015. The unemployment level rose in 2002 and 2009. At the end of 2015, the rate of unemployment in the Mari El Republic was 5.5%, that is almost equal to the average level of unemployment in Russia, 5.4%.
Conclusions and Relevance We conclude that the number of unemployed citizens increases in financial crisis periods. Considering the crisis of 2015, the unemployment rate has increased slightly in the Mari El Republic, and Russia as a whole. The results of the research can be used in the formation of the active State employment policy and regulation of demand for labor. In addition, the research findings will be used for introduction in the educational process of Labor Economics discipline.
