Importance The multifunctional purpose of forests requires the development of a forest management mechanism, which would include an effective system of organization of forestry activities in complex areas, ensuring the profitability of use of forest products and expanded reproduction of forest resources. Objectives The paper aims to assess the effectiveness of forest management in the Volgograd oblast as a sparsely wooded region in the South of the Russian Federation. Methods For the study, I used statistical and economic, and design and constructive methods of analysis. Results In the article, I propose the results of evaluation of the effectiveness of forest management in the Volgograd oblast. Conclusions The efficient development of the forest sector of the economy requires favorable social, economic, environmental, and political conditions.
