Subject The article considers the problems of sustainable development of the rural territories of the Orel oblast. Objectives The paper aims to assess the level of development of rural territories of the Orel oblast and give recommendations on the further development within the framework of short-term and long-term programs. Methods For the study, we used factor and cluster analyses, as well as the integral estimate. Results We estimated the level of development of the rural territories of the Orel oblast, taking into account the integrated set of indicators. We present certain recommendations for the further development of the territories within the framework of short-term and long-term programs. Conclusions We conclude that the current level of rural development does not contribute to an increase of rural population, increase in income and improvement of living standards. Constant monitoring of rural territories is necessary to identify the development progress.
