Importance The paper provides a definition and characteristics of the city as a social system in terms of the general systems theory and systems analysis.
Objectives The study aims to identify the main features of the city as a system.
Methods For the study, I used a system analysis of economic and social facilities.
Results The article identifies the main features of the city as a system, the basic element of which is the economy.
Conclusions and Relevance I conclude that the city as a system is not only the territory of residence of the townspeople, but as well the environment of their self-realization, activity and creativity. The results of this research can be used in further research and in practical activities to ensure the economic development of cities and regions.
