Importance The article considers the issues of formation and effective use of human capital.
Objectives The paper aims to define the human capital as an economic category, society's attitude to the notion of human capital and assess its role in the modern economy.
Methods We used the traditional analysis of the existing literature on the study of human capital, and an empirical analysis, as well.
Results We offer a definition of human capital as an economic category, and we ground the society's attitude to the notion of human capital. We provide an assessment of its role in the modern economy.
Conclusions and Relevance We conclude that there is a problem of low public awareness of the distinction between the human capital and other similar concepts, as well as the dependence of the growth of the economy and the social sphere on a clear understanding of the human capital concept. The results of the study can be used for further research.
