Importance The article examines socio-economic relations in the formation of organizations of civil society that define the processes and patterns of regional sustainable development.
Objectives The purpose of the article is to substantiate the influence of the density of civil society institutions on the sustainability of regional development.
Methods A system approach and method of dialectical cognition make a methodological basis of the article.
Results The paper identifies and analyzes the development stages and features of forming the institutions of civil society, defines the dependency of the results of the implementation of the strategy for sustainable regional development on the degree of informed participation of the population and the existence of appropriate institutional mechanisms for the management of the territory.
Conclusions and Relevance The paper concludes that the civil society institutions develop in fits and starts. Sustainable regional development is possible only with the maximum use of the civil initiative of the population on the principles of collaboration and partnership between civil society, local authorities and State power. The absence of the necessary density of institutions is a major challenge to regional development. The proposed recommendations and suggestions can be used by the legislative and executive authorities in socio-economic projects and programs aimed at sustainable regional development.
