Importance The article analyzes various problems of the industrial economy of the Stavropol Krai: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Objectives The aim of the paper is the analysis of the productive potential of the Stavropol Krai and diversification opportunities of the economic system of the region to ensure its sustainable development. Methods The study is based on statistics of the Federal State Statistics Service. Results The author conducts a complex analysis of the existing imbalances in the development of the agro-industrial complex of the Stavropol region. The author found that the most significant factor is the lack of development of industries for processing agricultural raw materials. The paper proves that the main task of agricultural modernization is the rapid development of the manufacturing sector by producing high-quality and competitive products based on modern technological structure and increase of innovation activity, as well as the harmonious development of all sectors of the agro-industrial production. Conclusions and Relevance The author concludes that the productive capacity of the region can be enhanced through the development of food industry, the intensification of production and improvement of its technology that will enhance the sustainability of the economy of the region as a whole, and improve the social situation by creating additional jobs and raise the living standards in the region.
