Importance The article discusses the heterogeneity of the economic and social development of the regions, as well as their differences in natural and geographical conditions. The paper considers the differentiation of areas of the Russian Federation by all the main parameters.
Objectives The purpose of the article is the classification of regions of the Russian Federation to identify homogeneous territorial units according to certain parameters.
Methods For the study, I used a hierarchical cluster analysis applying Ward's method. For the selection of indicators, used in clustering, I conducted a correlation analysis and built two linear regression models.
Results The typological analysis identified seven major clusters with very similar homogeneous characteristics which have correlation with measures of migration, and two clusters which include one region each. For the regions of the main area of settlement, the most important characteristics identified were socio-economic, ethnic and demographic features. The regions of the Asian part of the country are most characterized by the natural conditions, population density and the proportion of workers in the extractive industries. The paper shows that the leaders in migrant admission are the metropolitan regions, as well as a cluster of gas and oil producing regions of Western Siberia.
Conclusions I came to a conclusion about the strong differentiation of Russian regions in terms of economic and social development. I identified specific characteristics of particular groups of regions to be taken into account in the development of regional and federal programs and other activities related to the regulation of interregional migration.
