Subject The article considers the foreign trade activities of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the largest industrial region of the Russian Federation. Objectives The goal of the paper is to assess the status and trends of the foreign trade turnover of the Nizhny Novgorod region, the structure of trade, export and import, as well as to identify problems and factors of the development of foreign trade turnover. Methods For the study, we used statistical methods of evaluation of phenomena and processes, as well as structural, comparative analyses and the evaluation of time series. As well we examined numerous studies on the principles of international trade, long-term scenarios of foreign economic activity of the Russian Federation and the modernization of the legal system of the country, taking into account the commitments made when joining the WTO. Results The results of the research are analytical tables that can be used in the formulation of recommendations and mechanisms to improve foreign trade, and for preparing lectures and presentations on socio-economic development of the region. Conclusions and Relevance We concluded that the region's Government pursues an active policy of import substitution, allowing the Nizhny Novgorod manufacturers to enter the international market and facilitating the successful development of the region, creating and maintaining the image. The results of the study are of interest to specialists on socio-economic development of the region, as well as for potential partners in the field of foreign economic activity.
