Importance My article is devoted to the different structures of economy and the differentiation of regions of the Russian Federation on the socio-economic status. It is necessary to search for a new development model, which can be based on the formation of a unified regional economic space. Choosing a model is the fact that, according to various sources, the loss of the Russian economy from the ineffectiveness of spatial organization is around 3.0 per cent of GDP. Issues of a single regional economic space are especially important for small and semi-enclosed areas, which include the subjects of the North Caucasian Federal District. Under the current economic policy, it is problematic to leave the area of depression.
Objectives The aim of my paper is to analyze the situation and the possibility of creating a common economic space in the regions of the North Caucasian Federal District, characterized by depressive-critical state.
Methods The methodological basis of my research is the systematic approach. The objects of study are the regions of the North Caucasian Federal District. The study is based on the use of the process approach and statistical analysis methods.
Application The results of my research can be used by the authorities of the North Caucasian republics, the business community and specific enterprises, firms, companies in the development strategy, which would maintain stability and sustainability to the market shocks.
Conclusions I came to a conclusion that regions and territories, which are characterized by homogeneity and fractality and which on certain indications have similar figures, may form a regional model of economic space. It can become an essential tool to determine the location of the region in the international division of labor, it will allow the region to emerge from a state of depression and subsidization, and define its priorities.
