The last century was marked not only by high population growth, but technological progress in various fields of human activity as well. All of this has led to a sharp increase in the burden on the environment, particularly, in the growing speed of waste accumulation every year. Nowadays, many countries have already shifted the traditional model of waste treatment. It resulted in the concept of Zero waste which meets the principles of sustainable development and includes the items on the recycling and reuse of waste. This concept is based on the system of separate collection of waste by the population. The article analyzes the extent of readiness of residents of Nizhny Novgorod to the introduction of separate collection of municipal solid waste (MSW) on the basis of data obtained by opinion poll of city dwellers. The analysis of the survey results has identified the factors that contribute to and hinder the introduction of separate collection of MSW in Nizhny Novgorod. The study was conducted in cooperation with the Committee on ecology and nature management of the Legislative Assembly of the Nizhny Novgorod region.
