Importance The prospects of the future development and implementation of the possibility of creating an attractive and efficient use of the limited resources of the territory determine the trend of sustainable development of industrial production of the region. The approach to assessment of industrial development from the perspective of sustainability is relevant because it aims at solving problems of both present and future generations.
Objective The purpose of the study is researching the current status of processing industries in the region and identifying the reasons hindering the transition of the regional industry to sustainable development. In the present work, we tried to evaluate the contribution of the manufacturing industry in the region's economy, analyze the status of the manufacturing sector of the economy of the Republic of Bashkortostan and identify the causes affecting the sustainable development of the processing industry of the region.
Methods Using the empirical and statistical methods, we have analyzed the current status of the manufacturing industry of the Republic of Bashkortostan and the factors influencing its sustainable development, particularly the negative ones hindering the industrial transition to sustainability.
Conclusions We have concluded that the manufacturing industry of Bashkortostan has not yet formed a mechanism contributing to the sustainable development of the region's economy, not quite ready to go in a new technological way. Despite the positive dynamics of growth of manufacturing industry, it still retains negative processes that hamper the transition to sustainable development. These include weak competitiveness of manufacturing industries, low capacity of utilization, high degree of physical wear and tear of fixed assets, the lowest level of innovation activity, substantial sectoral differentiation on the level of average wages and a shortage of skilled labor, deterioration of financial performance, the low degree of diversification of the region's manufacturing industries.
