The article reveals the negative role of the existing sector imbalances in the development of the region, and it justifies the necessity of a qualitative transformation of the economy structure of the Republic of Dagestan. The author offers an approach to optimize an economic structure of the problem region, based on identification of the priority and secondary industries that have stable relationships and which form ways of increasing the region's competitiveness.
